The “new normal” post-pandemic
Australia’s road map to recovery and the “new normal” has been rolled out recently and while we know life has changed, what is the “new normal” for our children post COVID-19?
Since the restrictions began in March 2020, our kids have had to quickly adjust to a new way of life which included
- home isolation
- social distancing
- minimal contact with family
- new co-parenting schedules
- virtual classroom learning
- no outdoor recreational activities
- strict public hygiene practices.
As each state and territory stumble towards their version of the “new normal”, there are a few things we can do to help guide and prepare kids for the new normal after COVID-19.
Stay across all advice
Updates are frequent and can affect your routine, so read all communications from schools, as well as government and health advice as they can differ.
Communication is key
Keep an open dialogue with them about why we need to continue with social distancing and hygiene practices and why this new way of life is necessary.
Co-parenting
Adjusting to a new co-parenting structure will take time, but you have support around you so take advantage of that especially if your little one is struggling to understand the changes.
Dealing with stress
Some kids will adjust quickly, while others won’t. Take advantage of the tools and support groups to help manage any stress or anxiety they may have about going back into everyday life.
Kids will still be kids post COVID-19
Realistically our kids will probably hug their friends, share toys, cough without covering their mouths, touch everything, and just generally be kids. The best we can do is continue with a ‘prevention is better than cure’ approach and wash their hands every chance we get!
