Why reading books to your children is still important

Reading books to children is invaluable and can help give them a head-start in future learning.

Between work, homework, family time and chores, the very thought of reading can be exhausting and so opting for screen time seems like the better option. Although there are a variety of educational shows for kids, reading books to children is still important.

According to a research partnership paper released by the Victorian government and the University of Melbourne, reading books to children can improve their cognitive and communication skills as well as literacy and numeracy skills during pre-school and early childhood education.

Other benefits of reading with your child

How you can help with your child’s reading

  • Schedule reading or storytime with your child on a calendar, so they know the time is specifically for this activity
  • Create a reading space. It may help them focus if they have a dedicated space
  • Remove distractions: No phones, radios or people
